New Zealand Governor General, Lieutenant General the Right Honorable Sir Jerry Matepare will pay a state visit to Laos on August 12 to 14. The visit of the New Zealand Governor General, his spouse and delegation to Laos is made in response to an invitation from Lao President Choummaly Sayasone.
Lieutenant General Jerry Matepare was born on November 14, 1954 in Whanganui. He is married with five children and obtained a Master of Arts.
The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Matepare joined the New Zealand Army in 1972. From 1994 to 1995, he was Chief Observer for the United Nations Truce Supervision in Lebanon. In 1998, he was commander of the combined-force Peace Monitoring Group on Bougainville.
From 1999 to 2001, he was the Joint Commander for New Zealand forces attached to the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor .
In 2006 he was promoted to lieutenant-general and took up an appointment as the Chief of the New Zealand Defence Force.
He resigned from the New Zealand Army in January, 2011 and was appointed as Director of the Government Communication Security Bureau. In the same year, he was named the Governor-General of New Zealand.
