President Bounnhang Vorachit and his visiting Vietnamese counterpart Tran Dai Quang highly valued the time-honoured bilateral relationship and vowed to deepen comprehensive cooperation between the two neighbours.
President Quang and his delegation arrived Vientiane yesterday for a three-day state visit to Laos in response to an invitation from his Lao counterpart.
A welcoming ceremony was held at the Presidential Office followed by bilateral talks headed by the two presidents.
The presidents spoke highly of the traditional friendly relations, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam. They agreed to maintain regular exchange visits by delegations of both sides at all levels, according to a press release from the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The sides agreed to deepen cooperation in economics, trade, and investment as agreed by the two governments. Both sides accorded that they would work together to construct transportation routes to increase land connectivity.
The sides reached consensus to intensify their cooperation in maintaining security along their shared border, preventing transnational crimes, human trafficking, illegal trade, and illegal exploitation of national resources along the border areas.
Both sides agreed to work together in addressing issues concerning unregulated resettlement and unregistered marriage among their citizens along the border areas.
The sides agreed to work together to improve the quality of their human resource development cooperation.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.
This is the first visit to Laos by President Quang after his election as the country's President in April. The visit has contributed significantly in deepening further the traditional friendly relations, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two parties, states and peoples of Laos and Vietnam, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in the press release.
President Bounnhang, who is also Party Secretary General, briefed his guest about the successful outcomes of the 10th Party Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and the outcomes of the first session of the National Assembly's 8th legislature that elected the new government cabinet.
The Lao leader reaffirmed that the party, government and people of Laos stand ready to work with their Vietnamese counterparts to enrich the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam for the prosperity of the two peoples.
President Quang expressed his heartfelt thanks to the Lao leadership and people for the warm hospitality extended to his delegation.
On the same day, President Quang called on Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, President of the National Assembly, Ms Pany Yathortou and other retired leaders.
During his visit, the Vietnamese leader is scheduled to tour southern Champassak province where he is planned to call on former President Khamtay Siphandone and visit some production sites.
The Vietnamese side also presented US$1 million in financial support to fund the construction of schools in southern Xekong province.
