Laos envoy invites Sonowal in a bid to boost ties

"We had a very fruitful meeting with chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal," Sakonhninhorm told reporters here on Wednesday.

He said it was the people-to-people connectivity which will eventually foster a better relation between the two countries.

He also advocated for the enhancement of cultural exchange, tourism and business.

Inviting the two envoys to Guwahati was Chowdhury's initiative.

"We need to go ahead step by step," Sakonhninhorm added.

He also appreciated the works of Assamese businessman Habib Chowdhury for his work in Laos and his efforts to improve the ties between the two countries.

Chowdhury is the founding chairman of HSMM Group, that had humble origins in Assam and went on to become the largest agarwood and agar-based products' company in southeast Asia.

Guwahati: The ambassador of Laos to India, Southam Sakonhninhorm, has invited Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal to Laos to boost ties between the countries.

Sakonhninhorm and his Indian counterpart, Ravi Shankar Aisola, were in the city to attend the India vs Laos play-off qualifying match for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in Guwahati.

Referring to the 59-year-long diplomatic relationship between Laos and India as 'cordial', Sakonhninhorm said there was enormous potential for investment in various sectors as both countries are ASEAN members.

The ambassador said Laos was keen on investing in the tourism and mining sectors, in which Assam has enormous potential.
